Sew and Flip Pillow Design

  • First I cut 20 five inch squares. I measured in 3/4 of an inch from both edges of one corner and made of mark.  I repeated this procedure on the opposite corner except that the marks were 3 inches from the corner.

Then I cut bunches of strips and sewed them from the 3/4 inch mark to the 3 inch mark. The blue fabric was used like a foundation for the flip and sew strips.

After sewing strips on all 3 sides of the foundation, I trimmed the edges.

Then I sewed 4 blocks together to make a 10 inch blue star block.

After creating 4 of these blocks and adding a border of leftover strips....

a pillow top is created.

outta the trash design

Here's the little art quilt I sent to the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative.  The AAQI web site has a good (and new to me) tutorial on making a sleeve for hanging the little quiltlet out of folded triangles and a wooden skewer. Here's the link......www.alzquilts.org/sleeve.html

The alphabet letters are cut out of fabric by Lakehouse designs. I think it will be neat to put quotes or names into quilt designs.  Any short favorite quote suggestions out there?

Designing with the Trash

I did finish the Flutterby blocks and here they are all stacked up awaiting the design wall audition. There are 39 blocks in all and once it is pieced and quilted the quilt will reside in the reading-music room in Meyers Chuck, Alaska.  I think it will look so spiffy nonchalantly thrown on the daybed awaiting a friend who needs a good book, a cup of tea and a cozy quilt.

Now, for the "trash" part of todays blog. After finishing Flutterby, I looked in the trash bin and lo and behold, what did I see....scraps. Color coordinated little snips of Flutterby fabric. Too good to just throw away. So like any ecolo
gical quilter, I used the little pieces to make a little art quilt which will be in the post tomorrow to the Alzheimer's Art
Quilt Initative. This is a worldwide effort started by Ami Sims to raise money for research. The quilts will be up for auction soon. Check out the web site for further details. www.alzquilts.org

I will post a pic of the little quilt tomorrow.  Stay tuned.....

Flutterby Flutterby

Todays design is Flutterby.

I am so pleased with this quilt. It is made of 2 1/2 inch strips and fussy cut diamond shaped centers. The strips surround the block in log cabin style creating an even bigger diamond shape.  The fabric is designed by Tula Pink...loooove the name and love this buggy fabric! I plan on going to The Quilting Loft in Ballard to put all the patches on a design wall. I need to see it all together.

I must angst over patch placement.

The studio on the boat is a wonderful place to sew but limited on space to put up a big quilt for viewing before sewing. The owner of The Quilting Loft encourages customers to use the clasrroom for projects.  This is great for me as the design wall is big and then...

there is ALL that fabric waiting patiently just outside the classroom for perusal and purchase!

I am trying to take pics of some of my blocks to include here but alas, it is not to be this late at night. Perhaps tomorrow....
